Lon Campbell
Lon Campbell was born in 1947 in West Grove, Pennsylvania, but he spent most of his life in Cecil County, Maryland. He died of cancer on April 10, 2008.
Lon was a Supervisory Readjustment Counseling Team Leader for the Vet Center in Elkton, Maryland. He worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs for 40 years. He was also a licensed mortician.
Lon served in the U.S. Army from 1969-71. As a member of the Sixth US Army Escort Detachment, he served as a casualty escort for one and a half years at the Oakland Army Terminal in Oakland, California. During the Vietnam War, he escorted 40 bodies home to multiple states and represented the Army at the funerals.
Lon wrote about his experiences in these roles, as well as about the Maryland waterways that so enchanted him and the cancer that took him from us.
