Urban/Appalachia: Hazel Dickens & Band w/ Dave Reed, Hugh & Zane Campbell

8pm. $25, $23 mbrs & students.

Hazel Dickens moved from West Virginia to Baltimore’s burgeoning Bluegrass scene in 1954, becoming one of the genre’s first female stars. Her iconic songs resonate with calls for worker justice and sweet memories of home. Surrounded by her accomplished band including guitarist/harmony singer Dudley Connell of the Seldom Scene. Hazel hosts a tribute to her friend and fellow Appalachian musician Ola Belle Reed. Reed’s outdoor country music parks were havens for Appalachian immigrants, hosting the likes of George Jones, Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn. Ola Belle’s son Dave Reed and nephews Hugh and Zane Campbell open. Ola Belle fan, folklorist Cliff Murphy hosts Q & A.

Hugh and Zane also will have some of their handcrafted, folk art furniture on display. Hugh builds it and Zane does the art. Leon Kagarise’s photos of New River Ranch and Sunset Park also will be exhibited.
