Eva Campbell still writing at 90

Eva Brooks Campbell just turned 90. She lives in Laurelwood Care Center, and though she can no longer do some of the things she used to do, she is still a keen observer of nature and lover of the written word. We just posted a little piece she wrote about the trees in the yard outside her window. The imagery is lovely.

Last July, Hugh and Zane played at the Chesapeake Folk Festival in St. Michael’s, MD. Hugh’s daughter Chloe introduced them. She wrote an original piece, tying her Maryland childhood to her Appalachian roots, and read it at the festival. We have included her introduction in Campbell Stories, because we think it, like the rest of Chloe’s writing, is brilliant.

Hugh sings his songs in Round the Mountain at Creative Alliance

Hugh showcased his song writing talents in Caleb Stine’s Round the Mountain show at Creative Alliance at the Patterson in Baltimore last weekend. Hugh was great, as was the entire show. Hugh, Zane, and David play for Pickering Creek

Hugh, Zane, and Dave Reed recently took their mountain roots to the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, playing a benefit for Pickering Creek Audubon Center at Grubby Neck Century Farm in Easton, MD. They loved the event, especially since it was for such a good cause. Pickering Creek, a 400-acre working farm on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is dedicated to community-based conservation of natural resources through environmental education and outreach. Hugh Campbell on Radio Show

Hugh Campbell will be singing some of his songs on Baltimore’s NPR radio station, WYPR, 88.1-FM. The show is “The Signal” and airs this Friday, February 18th, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. and again from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

“The Signal,” a weekly radio magazine, explores Maryland’s artistic and cultural scene. WYPR producer Aaron Henkin hosts along with Maryland Traditions (this week’s co-producer) folklorist Cliff Murphy.

Hugh’s portion of the show was recorded at Hugh’s art/music/woodworking shop in Elkton and also features Appalachian gospel singer Burton DeBusk and his wife Lizzy, and Baltimore songwriter Caleb Stine.

Another Impressive Hugh and Zane Show

Hugh and Zane brought their family music show to Herr’s Auditorium in Nottingham, PA, on Saturday, October 23rd. Sponsored by the Oxford Arts Alliance, the show featured Hugh and Zane’s family music, as well as Appalachian gospel sung by the DeBusk Weaver family. Dean Sapp, on banjo and fiddle, and Gary Irving, on mandolin, added a fine new dimension to the show. Photos will be posted as soon as this currently rather harried Web master finds the time.

Frostburg Show a Success

Hugh and Zane brought their family musical history show to the Appalachian Festival in Frostburg on September 18th. They were great, had good crowds, and played some of their songs, including “Shape of a Tear” and “Grandma Bessie,” as well as Ola Belle’s “High on a Mountain” and Uncle Hub’s “Don’t You Call My Name.” Their first performance included an onstage interview about the Campbell family and their migration from Lansing, NC, to PA and MD. Ola Belle’s CD and the Creative Alliance’s southern migration series is generating interest in how the southern mountain families, including the Campbells, brought the music north.
